According to bettors on the decentralized prediction market platform Polymarket, the chances of former US President Donald Trump emerging victorious in the next presidential election surged to a record high in light of an assassination attempt on him that was foiled.
Wounded by a rally shooting in Pennsylvania, Trump saw his election win odds rise to around 10 points at 70% on Polymarket, a website allowing people to bet on various forms of events using cryptocurrency.
Trump Safe After Shooting at Rally
The Republican presidential candidate was confirmed to be safe following the incident, according to a Secret Service spokesperson, says The New York Times. The altercation ended with the killing of a suspected assailant and one innocent bystander, published reports said.
Defiant images and videos of Trump with a bloodstained face, making fist-pump gestures went viral on social media in the aftermath. This came at the end of weeks during which public discussion had been dominated by missteps and perceived weaknesses of his rival, now-President Joe Biden.
After the event, meme tokens named in honor of Trump, also known as “PoliFi” tokens, surged. MAGA rose 47% in 24 hours to $9.32, while TREMP increased by 22% to $0.4866, per data from CoinMarketCap.
On the other hand, BODEN, a meme coin inspired by President Joe Biden, experienced a 21% drop to $0.03181 during the same time. While these tokens have been the rage for speculation purposes regarding an election outcome, they have no actual payout to token holders if that candidate does win. Current Election Odds of Biden winning can be found on Polymarket at 16%.
Trump is reported to have confirmed as a featured speaker at a Bitcoin conference later this month, shortly after he claimed to promise to support the cryptocurrency in case of his victory in elections scheduled for November 5, 2024. In a statement last month in Washington, D.C., Trump said, “I will ensure that the future of Bitcoin is forged in the U.S. and not relegated abroad. I will uphold the right to self-custody.”
