A groundbreaking initiative to save Poland’s very culture through the use of blockchain tech has been launched by Poland’s Bank Pekao.
According to a recent press release, in a partnership with Aleph Zero, the bank launched Archiv3, a project to tokenize and secure Polish artwork for future generations.
Digitizing well-known Polish artworks by Jan Matejko or Stanisław Wyspiański, for instance, is the subject of the project, which uses advanced 3D scanning technology. They then get turned into non fungible tokens (NFTs) and saved on the eco-friendly Aleph Zero blockchain and preserved for the future.
Pekao Art In Arctic Archive
The tokenized art will be archived in the Arctic World Archive (AWA), a facility in Svalbard, Norway, which is an archive specifically designed to preserve critical data from cyberattacks, natural disasters and any other type of existential threats.
The Archiv3 already noted in an Archiv3 release that the AWA has previously safeguards important cultural and scientific data for institutions such as UNESCO and the Vatican.
By exploiting the security and accessibility features of blockchain, Bank Pekao wanted to protect these works even during global catastrophes. The move is part of a growing trend in the banking industry that is seeing traditional institutions use modern technologies such as blockchain to better manage digital assets.
The move follows Christie’s recent announcement on October 2 that an auction house will start issuing blockchain-based ownership certificates for art sold at auction.
