Elon Musk’s social app X, formerly known as Twitter, no longer automatically generates emojis for hashtags related to bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies.
Remarkably, the platform, which is known for having some of the busiest cryptocurrency communities, made this change without making a public announcement until Friday morning in Europe.
Crypto fans on X began to notice the absence of emojis when they used words like “#bitcoin” early on Friday. It turned out that the emojis for other popular crypto names, like #bnbchain and #cryptocom, were also missing.
Bitcoin Hashtags Lose Emojis
Additionally, crypto-related hashtags were taken down. They also removed the #MAGA emoji, which previously featured an image of Republican candidate Donald Trump. This change occurred immediately before Trump’s scheduled speech at the ongoing Bitcoin 2024 meeting in Nashville.
Adding emojis to hashtags became popular in 2020, when Jack Dorsey was in charge. He wanted to make the bitcoin symbol more well-known in Unicode, which is a global standard for text encoding.
Brands could make themselves more visible and set themselves apart from competitors with this feature. According to reports, at its height, X charged businesses up to $1 million to have their logo show next to certain hashtags.
Many users are wondering why X recently removed these emojis. We don’t know if this is a permanent change to X’s branding approach or if it’s a sign of a bigger shift. For now, the vibrant symbols that once graced crypto hashtags have vanished, leaving people to speculate about their eventual return.
