The US Senate Committee on Armed Services has asked the Department of Defense (DOD) to look into how blockchain technology could be used for national security purposes, especially in managing the supply chain.
In a recent order, the committee told Retired General Lloyd Austin, Secretary of Defense, to look into how blockchain could be used in the DOD. This order was in the report for the fiscal year 2025 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), which came out on July 9. Authorizations for the Army, Navy, Air Force, and other defense-wide projects are laid out in the report.
Blockchain enhances defense supply chain security
The committee discussed the benefits of blockchain, including its potential to make the defense supply chain’s cryptography more secure, data more reliable, and the chance of near-peer rivals changing or corrupting data much lower. The committee stressed the importance of blockchain for meeting national security goals by making supply chain data safe, clear, accountable, and auditable.
To move this project forward, the group has asked Austin to provide a full report by April 1, 2025.
“A plan for pilot programs or research and development efforts to explore the use of blockchain technology in national security applications, including supply chain management, cybersecurity for critical infrastructure assets, and procurement auditability.”
The talk needs to cover six main points: the pros and cons of using blockchain in supply chain management, how widely it is used in the industry right now, and how it is used in places like China and Russia. It should also discuss whether or not blockchain technology can be used and how much it would cost to do so.
The Senate committee is pushing for the use of blockchain, and leaders in the US are also pushing for Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies to be used by more people. A change made on July 8 to Donald Trump’s campaign website for president by the Republican Party showed that the Republican National Committee has added a policy statement supporting cryptocurrencies and Bitcoin mining.
We will defend the right to mine Bitcoin, ensure every American has the right to self-custody of their digital assets, and transact free from government surveillance and control.
