The Floki cryptocurrency project is rolling out its eagerly awaited debit card, allowing crypto users to pay using crypto at merchants who accept Visa or Mastercard. A physical and virtual version of the card is being released by Floki that represents an important shift from meme coin beginnings to an overall ecosystem.
Launching in the first instance in 31 European countries including Italy, Spain and Germany, plans are in place to gradually expand out further in the future. However, global virtual gift cards are available. Lastly, the card will not be available in OFAC sanctioned regions.
Floki Expands Utility with Debit Card Launch Amid Valhalla Game Delay
It also supports eight blockchain networks, zero exchange rate fees, and zero transaction fees. Floki, the token used to top up the card, is users’ key of value and can be topped up using Floki’s native token or leading digital currencies and stablecoins including Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, Tether (USDT), and USDC.
The physical card costs €32 up front shipping and the virtual card will cost €10 up front. A 2% fee applies for top-ups.The launch coincides with Floki’s announced strategy in March to transform the project into a top tier cryptocurrency ecosystem with staking services and other utilities.
Some of that excitement was tempered by delays in the rollout of the game of its flagship metaverse blockchain, Valhalla. Valhalla is now expected to be released Q1 2025 delayed from a late 2024 release following feedback from security audits, the team says in order to prioritize user safety.
Floki’s debit card launch shows they don’t just want to be a native token fighting for price, but an expanding utility and adoption while the native token’s price came under pressure from these delays.
