One of the industry’s rising stars, Sam Bankman-Fried, issued his farewell speech before heading to federal jail. In a special interview with ABC News on April 1, he expressed his doubts about his acts being against the law.
On March 28, Bankman-Fried was sentenced by United States District Court for the Southern District of New York Judge Lewis Kaplan. From the Brooklyn Metropolitan Detention Center, he conveyed his emotions. He expressed regret and stated he never intended for anyone to get hurt or lose funds.

Recognizing that the slip had occurred during his tenure, Bankman-Fried stated that he was driven to undo the harm. Judge Kaplan rebuked him, noting that despite his expressions of grief, he had not been sincere during the hearings. But in response, Bankman-Fried apologized and underlined the importance of paying the impacted parties as soon as possible.
Bankman-Fried claimed that FTX had enough funds to provide all compensation and blamed the exchange’s inability to continue operations after his departure. He lamented the impact on his former colleagues as well as the decline of charity endeavors.
The case took an unexpected turn when Bankman-Fried accused Sullivan & Cromwell of bias and meddling in his trial’s fairness. He announced his intention to pursue an appeal in order to challenge the limitations imposed on his defense and the errors in the testimony he gave during the trial.
