A major hacker got into WazirX, an important Indian cryptocurrency exchange by trade volume, and stole over $234 million worth of different cryptocurrencies.
Today, web3 security company Cyvers brought attention to the breach that happened with WazirX’s Ethereum-based multi-signature wallet. Based on records from the blockchain, the losses are $234.9 million.
Etherscan says the hack began today at 6:19 UTC with a transaction of 4.1 Gnosis (GNO) from a WazirX wallet to the hackers’ address. Since then, thieves have taken a number of things, such as the meme coins Pepe (PEPE) and Shiba Inu (SHIB).
WazirX Hackers Create Addresses
The thieves have made several addresses to hide the stolen funds. They are shifting the tokens between these addresses and using Uniswap V3 to change the tokens to Ethereum (ETH). The funds is currently held by three known hacker addresses.
The main address in question has 15,296 ETH worth $52.5 million in it, as well as over 100 tokens worth an extra $25.1 million. The second-largest investment is Floki (FLOKI), which is worth $4.7 million.
WazirX admitted the breach and said that its security team is looking into it. To protect customer assets, withdrawals in crypto and Indian rupees (INR) have been put on hold.
This attack comes after a string of recent problems in the crypto world, such as the loss of $8 million by the decentralized cross-chain system LI.FI. There were hacks in June alone that cost a total of $176.2 million.
